My story takes place in 1841, where I, Solomon Northup, a free African-American man, am kidnapped and sold into slavery. Given the name “Platt,” I have to keep my true identity and intelligence a secret in order to survive the next 12 years in slavery. Taking place 20 years before the Civil War, tensions are high between races as the morality of slavery starts to be questioned.

The Help Movie Review

  • Year: 2011
  • Country: United States
  • Producer: Tate Taylor
  • Set in the fall of 1962 in the town of Jackson, Mississippi, The Help is a story of how Skeeter Phelan, a young aspiring journalist, works to tell the story of black women who spend their lives taking care of prominent Southern family households.

Serving as a powerful backdrop, the Civil Rights Movement creates a changing wind in the town, as well as the rest of the country, while empowering the maids of Jackson to speak out. The women are not initially willing to share their stories should it put their lives in danger, but once the maid of one of Skeeter’s close friends, Aibileen, stands up to the challenge and the violence of the social tension hits their home town, other maids follow.

As Skeeter interviews the maids in her hometown, she forges strong bonds with the brave women who collaborate with her, while breaking the friendships she held with the women who employ them. Before long, the entire town is caught up in the changing times.

The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo - Trailer

  • Year: 2008
  • Country: Congo, the Democratic Republic of the
  • Producer: Lisa Jackson
  • Topics / Regions: War Rape Eastern Congo
  • "Shot in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), this documentary feature explores the shocking plight of women and girls caught in the sexual crossfire as this giant African nation enters its second decade of internal conflict. Since 1998, a brutal war has ravaged the DRC, killing over 4 million people. Over the same time, tens of thousands of women and girls have been systematically kidnapped, raped, mutilated and tortured by soldiers - both from foreign militias and the Congolese army that is supposed to protect them. Emmy®-winning filmmaker Lisa F. Jackson, herself a survivor of gang rape, travels deep inside the DRC to understand what is happening and why. Her resultant film features interviews with survivors, activists, peacekeepers, physicians and, most chillingly, two groups of rapists who are soldiers of the Congolese Army. Above all, it highlights first-person accounts of dozens of rape survivors, who recount their stories with pulverizing honesty and immediacy. Heart-wrenching in its portrayal of the grotesque realities of life in Congo, the film also provides inspiring examples of resiliency, courage and grace, while serving as a call to action for anyone with a conscience. Bosnia Hotel

  • Year: 1996
  • Country: Kenya
  • Producer: Thomas Balmès
  • Topics / Regions: UN Peacekeepers Samburu Warriors
  • " When Samburu warriors of Kenya served in Bosnia as part of the U.N. peacekeeping forces, they found a world quite different from their pastoral existence in their homeland. They did not understand the reasons for the conflict, and upon their return, filmmakers recorded their candid impressions of a culture so remote from their own. Bosnia Hotel: Kenyan Warriors in Bosnia contrasts their stark world, frequently seen as primitive, with that of an advanced society where people ruthlessly killed one another, and even found targets among women and children. » Alice Day, NY TIMES"
